Sicily is an exotic blend of deeply rich history and an energetic present. Astonishing landscapes, ancient marvels, and extraordinary diversity create a heady brew! You’ll find timeless monasteries next to Norman churches. Greek churches next to classic Italian palaces. Wander through Byzantine cathedrals on your way to a bustling marketplace for local treats and leather goods. Sicily is a feast for the senses.
The earliest evidence we have of people who lived on the island dates back to 12,000 BC. By 750 BC Sicily had three Phoenician colonies and a dozen Greek colonies. Just south of the Italian Peninsula, and separated by the Strait of Messina, the weather is ideal, and the beaches are glorious. Sicily invites you to enjoy her distinctive personality.

Frosts are quite rare. It is a historic city, and the capital of the Italian province of the same name.
Founded by the Ancient Greek Corinthians, 2,700 year-old Syracuse was quite a powerful city-state. It was described by Cicero as “the greatest Greek city, and the most beautiful of them all.” By the 5th century BC, it was equal in size to Athens. The city is note-worthy for its Greek and Roman history, amphitheaters, architecture, culture, and as the birthplace of mathematician Archimedes.

Spellbinding Coastal Syracuse
Syracuse was second only to Athens as the most important city in Greece. Today, go out and about and explore! You might like to take a boat to mystical caves, the place where time slips away. Or you might explore the ruins of ancient temples inside the city. Go to the pier and gaze out on the Mediterranean before taking a walk on the beach. Choose to simply stroll the streets and shop for handcrafted goods, dip into an enticing cafe, and then be amazed when a small lane opens into a Baroque Piazza. We do feel that a stop at the Piazza Duomo might top your list. Breakfast is included.
Syracuse Trivia: Q. Does Syracuse, Sicily, distort sounds? A. Yes and no. The Ear of Dionysius is a strange slice of cavern in Syracuse. This slim cut in limestone is 75 feet high and just wide enough to enter. Listen to the sounds: Your voice reaches out and comes back to you, over and over again. And it’s true—tearing a sheet of paper can sound as sharp as a firecracker or gunshot. The painter famed for his use of shadow, Caravaggio, gave the cave its name. It is said that in ancient times, political prisoners were dropped here so rulers could listen in on their conversations. The origin of the cave, man-made or formed by nature, is a mystery.

The 14-night Ireland vacation was pretty amazing. While it included a lot of driving and staying in nine different hotels, I don't think there is any other way to see as much of the country as we did. Every hotel check-in and scheduled event went smoothly with no glitches or delays. Ireland is such a beautiful place with an incredibly rich history. Visible everywhere you go are ruins of ancient fortresses, each telling an amazing story of the founders and conquerors who shaped this country. People in Ireland are proud, warm, friendly and happy. We always felt safe and welcome. Thank you, Amber and Authentic Vacations!
