Salterbridge Gate Lodge

Salterbridge Gatelodge, located in the glorious Blackwater valley, dates from the mid 19th Century. Situated on the Salterbridge Estate, on the valley road a mile from the charming village of Cappoquin, the lodge is only 6 miles from the heritage town of Lismore, 10 miles from the sea at Youghal and Dungarvan, and at the foot of the majestic Knockmealdown Mountains. Salterbridge is a classically proportioned pavilion Gate Lodge, which was constructed in 1849 by the Chearnly family, who owned the estate from the mid 18th Century until the 1950s. This enchanting and lovingly restored property accommodates two people in great comfort & romantic style. Among Salterbridge's interesting features is an Octagonal Garden Room from which the two main rooms, bedroom and sitting room lead. The kitchen and bathroom are to the rear of the house. A stay at Salterbridge guarantees seclusion, comfort, and romantic appeal in abundance.

Cappoquin Village: On The Map: Cappoquin is located in west County Waterford, in the southeast of Ireland. It lies at the junction of the R669 regional road and N72 national secondary road (which connects Fermoy to the west and Dungarvan to the east). Cappoquin occupies a picturesque location on a sharp 90-degree bend in the River Blackwater, nestled at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains. Cappoquin is noted as the birthplace of Michael Cavanagh, a prominent Irish poet, writer, historian and Fenian rebel. Wanted by the law after an attack on the local English Barracks, Cavanaugh absconded to America with fellow rebels, where he regularly and fondly wrote of Cappoquin and its inhabitants. A remarkable discovery of 7,000 year old artifacts was made just south of town in the 1980s, provifing evidence and clues to the existence of some of Ireland's earliest inhabitants. Cappoquin is a renowned angling spot, as a result of its location at the top of the tidal water of the River Blackwater. Cappoquin House (pictured), an 18th Century Georgian Mansion enjoys magnificent views over the river. The House is only open to the public on a limited basis, but its celebrated gardens are open year-round. The lovely Glenshelane River Walk runs close to the town, which is situated on the exciting and very scenic Lismore & The Vee Drive.

Dining

Salterbridge Gate Lodge is your own personal romantic retreat. There will be no other guests or a management presence during your stay, and therefore no meals are included or supplied. The Lodge has a Kitchen area with cooker, fridge & microwave, so it is perfectly possible to prepare your own meals. A great variety of pubs, restaurants and cafes are available within a few miles of the Lodge in the villages of Cappoquin, Lismore & Dungarvan.
