Glenlo Abbey Hotel
Built in 1740 by the Ffrench family, one of Galway’s famous merchant ‘tribes’, Glenlo Abbey has seen a long and rich history overlooking the River Corrib. Changing ownership a number of times, the original five-bay, two storey house and estate has been beautifully restored to its former glory and allows guests to take a step back in time. The hotel is visited by many today and effortlessly exudes the character and magnificence of a bygone era to create a truly unique experience. Surrounded by 138 private acres of lush woodlands in the Lough Corrib area, Glenlo Abbey is a short 10-minute drive from Galway city centre and provides the best of both countryside and urban life. All rooms and services are designed to deliver an authentic 5-star experience and include a number of exciting activities such as falconry, cycling and golfing. One of the many highlights of the estate is the presence of two original train carriages from the Orient Express. Dating from 1927, the carriages ran from Paris to Istanbul to St. Petersburg, with one of the pair even being featured in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Today, the carriages are placed on the grounds at Glenlo Abbey Hotel and serve as their award-winning Pullman Restaurant, offering a completely unique and memorable dining experience to all guests.
