Reykjavik with a Local Guide

This morning look forward to a guided tour through the world’s northernmost capital city. Reykjavik has plenty to offer from impressive landmarks to arresting architecture to museums exploring the city’s 1,000 year history and spectacular scenery. In the afternoon there will be free time, so consider exploring further on your own, browse the shops or relax in a cafe.

Must-See Sites

Ingolfstorg Square, Reykjavik, Capital Region

Ingólfstorg is a cozy place in Downtown Reykjavík with geothermal steam vents. The square is named after Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland. The remains of his longhouse can be seen in The Settlement Exhibition down the street. Surrounded by shops and places to eat, this place becomes a community gathering for different types of events and street food markets. In December it transforms into a Yule Town Christmas Market and Ice Skating Rink. The Ice Rink is open from the 1st of December until Christmas and it has FREE admission. You can rent the skates and helmets for a fee. Yule Town offers a wide selection of hand-crafted gifts, Christmas decorations, delicious food, and a large ice-skating rink in the middle of the square. Yule Town will be open December 2nd – 23rd. 

Hverfisgata, Reykjavik, Capital Region

On The Map: Hverfisgata is a street in Reykjavik which runs parallel to Laugavegur and stretches from Hlemmi down to Lækjargata.

Only a few years ago, Hverfisgata in central Reykjavik was run down and gritty and played the part of the poor cousin to Laugavegur, the street which it runs adjacent to, however, in the last couple of years, Hverfisgata has become more and more gentrified, with the street facade becoming prettier and more modern, chic places opening up. You'll find a variety of restaurants with unique atmospheres and delectable menus, as well as a great selection of shopping, art, and culture-filled night-life opportunities.

Perlan Museum, Reykijavik, Capital Region

The Perlan Museum, translated to “the pearl” in English, is an iconic glass-dome building situated within six decommissioned hot water storage tanks on the highest hill in Reykjavík, Öskjuhlíð. Recently opened in 2017, the museum hosts an exquisite exhibition where you can learn about and experience the wonders of Icelandic nature in a unique and unforgettable way. The main attraction, the Glaciers and Ice Cave exhibition, allows you to walk through a 100-meter (300 ft.) long man-made cave (the first of its kind in the world) before entering the interactive portion. Once you enter the interactive portion, you will learn more details about Iceland’s treasured glaciers, their future, and how they affect global warming. Included in the exhibition ticket is access to the observation deck, which provides the best views of Reykjavík and its surrounding areas. Perlan is a must-see, not only for the museum, but also for its incredible architecture, amazing panoramic views, and its excellent restaurant and gift shops.

It sits on the Ring Road that encircles the country, and is one of the last stops en route to the South Coast.

  The name is Selfoss is somewhat of an anomaly. The word ‘foss’ in Icelandic means ‘falls’, therefore place names such as Gullfoss, Goðafoss and Svartifoss all refer to waterfalls; there is even a waterfall in the north also called Selfoss. In the town, however, the river is flat, and no one is quite sure why it is named such.

Golden Circle

We set off on the incredible Golden Circle Tour to visit Iceland’s showstopping sights. Our first stop on this full-day excursion will be at Geysir (Lunch Buffet) geothermal area – home to the active geyser Strokkur which shoots up a 30-metre column of water every few minutes. The iconic Gullfoss waterfall will be next - witness the spectacular view as water plummets down 32 metres into a rugged canyon. On a sunny day, a rainbow can be seen over the falls. The tour finishes at the UNESCO Þingvellir National Park - as the site of the ancient Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, which was established in 930 AD, it is of great historical importance. During the day we will also stop at the Fontana Spa to see how rye bread is made and enjoy a tasting

Another adventurous day lies ahead as we traverse along Iceland’s south coast. Highlights include the amazing waterfalls at Seljandsfoss and Skogafoss, the incredible Sólheimajökull glacier, the famous Black Sand beach and the nearby fishing village of Vík.

Blue Lagoon

A morning drive along the south coast takes us through Hveragerði and southwards towards the Strandakirkja Church located in the raw surroundings facing the North Atlantic Ocean. We pass the Nature reserve of Reykjanesfólkvangur before we visit one of Iceland’s biggest highlights – Blue Lagoon. Make the most of some free time at this breathtaking thermal spa in the heart of a volcanic landscape – buy a refreshment at the floating bar or test out the exfoliating Silica mud. In the afternoon we arrive back to Reykjavík. Until the evening you will be left to your own devices. Perhaps go on a final shopping spree, wander around more of the city or visit a museum. This evening we will go for a farewell dinner at the incomparable Viking Village in the charming suburb of Hafnarfjórdur. Take the opportunity to sample some mouth-watering Icelandic delicacies such as dried fish served with Icelandic schnapps, shark, lamb shank and Skyr (traditional yogurt with blueberry sauce and sorbet). The perfect way to end our Icelandic adventure!
