Bustling Oslo - Cultural Capital of Norway

Today we explore Oslo in depth as we visit its landmarks and wander around its many districts. Main sights that we will see include the Royal Palace, the medieval fortress of Akershus, the modern opera house, the city hall and the wharf of Aker Brygge Pier. Next, we explore Oslo’s cultural centre – Bygdøy Island – home to three impressive museums: Viking Museum, Kon Tiki and Fram Museum. For a tranquil respite from the bustling city streets, we stroll through Frogner Park, home to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, one of Oslo’s most popular tourist attractions. In the afternoon consider spending some free time in the lovely shopping street of Karl Johan or perhaps enjoy the seafront at the Tjuvholmen island or Aker Brygge Pier, the Scandinavian answer to St. Tropez!

Sognefjord Cruise & Flåm Railway

We transfer to the Railway Station to catch the NSB train to Myrdal. Our journey takes us into the wild and scenic Norwegian fjord landscape, past the idyllic resort of Geilo and up to the mountain station in Myrdal. In Myrdal, we board the historical mountain train of Flåmsbana. This train ride is considered to be one of the most breathtaking in the world thanks to its scenic stops which include sparkling waterfalls and idyllic valleys. We then journey to Flåm village, located on the shore of the deep Nærøyfjord where you'll enjoy a 2-hour mini cruise through the magical Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and steepest fjord with absolutely breathtaking scenery and an absolute highlight of our tour.

Flam, Western Norway

On the map: The charming town of Flåm is situated at the innermost point of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord - the world's deepest and second-longest fjord.

Surrounded by sheer mountainsides, towering waterfalls, and narrow valleys, this area is paradise for anyone seeking the unique and spectacular nature that Norway has to offer. Flåm offers some of the most well-known attractions in Norway. Flåmsbana - the Flåm Railway - is widely recognized as one of the steepest and most lovely railways in the world. The dramatic Stegastein viewing platform juts out high above the Aurlandsfjord. South of Flåm Harbor, the 17th-century wooden Flåm Church lies in the valley. Flåm is also home of the spectacular Nærøyfjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

As Flåm is one of four harbours that welcome cruise ships to Aurland Harbour Authority, large cruise ships gliding into Sognefjord to Flåm harbour are a daily sight in spring and summer.

Bergen's Fish Market & Museums

Today you'll go for a 4 hour panoramic tour of Bergen with a local guide. We visit the Bryggen Pier to enjoy a fish tasting at the Fish Me Fishmarket and visit the Troldhaugen Museum, home of famous composer Edvard Grieg. There will also be time for an exterior visit of the mystical Fantoft Stave Church – a short drive outside the city.

Bergen & Funicular Train Fløibanen

There is free time today to relax or to explore this picturesque city independently. Alternatively, we can arrange a 1-hour helicopter ride over the Hardangerfjord. In the early evening, we take the funicular Fløibanen through the mountain up to Bergen’s highest point for stunning views of the city and its surrounding fjords.

Hardangerfjord

Our road trip continues southwards today, passing the tremendous waterfalls of Steindalsvossen and onto the scenic road along the Hardangerfjord. We cross the fjord by car ferry at Kvanndal to Utne, where we visit Hardanger Folk Museum to hear about the history of the area and its local society. We continue by ferry to Kinsarvik where we drive the remaining few minutes to our hotel for the night, located directly in front of the Hardangerfjord. We will spend the rest of the afternoon in this spectacular setting.

Lofthus, Western Norway

On the map: Lofthus is a village in Ullensvang municipality which is located in the Hardanger region of Hordaland county, Norway. The village lies along the eastern shore of the Sørfjorden, along the Norwegian National Road 13. Lofthus is often dubbed 'the orchard of Hardanger' with fantastic views to the Folgefonna glacier.

Visiting Lofthus gives you a good starting point for many exciting experiences. The surrounding area is often known as the orchard of Hardanger, a name this beautiful district bears proudly.

The scenery in Hardanger is at its most beautiful in Lofthus, with fantastic views of the Folgefonna glacier. It is easy to understand why Lofthus was one of Edvard Grieg's favourite haunts.

Spring reveals a pink and white symphony of apple blossoms contrasting sharply with green hills and snow-capped mountains, with the fjord as a backdrop. Lofthus is situated on the eastern shore of Sørfjorden, an arm of the Hardangerfjord.

Return to Oslo

Today you'll journey from Hardangerfjord back to Oslo stopping at the elaborate Heddal Stave Church near Notoddenm Telemark. The largest stave chuch in Norway, this impressive 13th-century structure has the appearance of a wooden cathedral with 3 distinctive towers. For our last evening we'll indulge in shellfish and king crab platters at Tjuvholmen Sjomagasinet, a vast fine dining seafood experience with multiple dining rooms, a crab and lobster tank, sprawling terrace, wine bar, and wet fish shop.
