This New Zealand vacation is an exceptional opportunity to experience the best of the country’s Northern Island. Your travels begin in Auckland, a diverse city with the world’s largest collection of Māori and Pacific artifacts. You’ll spend one full day with a gourmet food and wine tour on Waiheke Island, just off the coast. Also known as The City of Sails, make time to enjoy the beautiful waters. Auckland is quite large but outdoor adventure and scenic wonders are all nearby.
After picking up your car, you’re on the road to Matamata and a tour of the Hobbiton movie set. Get into the Lord of the Rings! Continue on to Rotorua, a geothermal miracle. A Polynesian spa, in a private deluxe pool, awaits. Soak up the beauty of wildly-colored sulfur springs, northern lakes, and volcanoes on a helicopter tour over land that few people are privileged to see.
Your next stop is Napier. Along the way, go to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Park and Haku Falls. Be prepared for a thrilling, jet-boat ride. In Napier, take advantage of a self-guided bike tour from the port village of Ahuriri to the city center. (Napier is an Art Deco treasure.) You might also explore the sacred grounds of Te Urewera or a colony of 13,000 wild gannets at the Cape Kidnappers Reserve.
Your final day is spent in Wellington, capital of New Zealand. On a brilliant blue harbor, you’ll have time on your own to discover a wealth of culture, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Head to Willis or Cuba Street to shop, and when the evening rolls around, check the Cuba Quarter for great nightlife. This tour of New Zealand is ideal for an insider’s view of the North Island.
Check-in time is after 3 PM on your day of arrival. Check-out before 11 AM.
Suggested Sightseeing
Mount Eden, North Island
On the map: Mount Eden is a dormant volcanic cone that rises 643 feet above sea level and is Auckland’s highest natural point. The stone observation platform, built by a royal elephant from Nepal named Tom, has 360-degree views. Eden’s last eruption, 28,000 years ago, spewed lava from three different cones to form the land Auckland sits upon. The mountain was a traditional fortified MÄori village. Walk to the top and you’ll see terraces, storage pits, and housing sites. Let your mind wander back to the lives that made up this settlement. Now, check out the award-winning gardens, complete with waterfalls, plant varieties, native birds, and extraordinary harbor views on the side of the mountain. You’ll come upon Eden Village, a community of artists and writers. Some of Auckland’s most exciting modern art is born here. (Dip into one of the fine Asian restaurants.) Eden’s 160-foot-deep crater, The Bowl of Mataaho, is named after the god who lives inside it. It’s said he guards the secrets of the earth. Standing on Mount Eden, you might believe it’s true!
Auckland Art Gallery, North Island
On the map: The Gallery first opened its doors in 1888 and shared space with Auckland’s Public Library. Today the Gallery’s collection numbers more than 17,000 works. This museum is alive with energy! Its ambition is to make a meaningful contribution to the cultural life of New Zealand by collaborating with creative communities and offering art experiences that engage, challenge, and inspire diverse audiences. Their major holdings of historic and contemporary art make up a visual timeline of New Zealand. Truly amazing. Outstanding works by MÄori and Pacific Island artists are a powerful feature. The Gallery’s oldest work of art is a sandstone figure from the walls of a Hindu temple in North India. Their newest is likely to be a commissioned piece that they’re creating with an artist in the present.
Sky Tower, North Island
On the map: Auckland’s Sky Tower sketches the city’s unique skyline from every vantage point. Soaring 1,076 feet above Auckland, it is the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest free-standing fixture. It functions as the world’s largest FM radio transmitter, but it’s renowned as a center for dining, wild adventures, and local activities. Take a walk on the wild side and experience the SkyWalk. Pull-on a full-body harness and stroll around the tower’s ledge, 630 feet above the ground. For those looking for the ultimate rush, there’s the SkyJump—bungee jump off the tower! You may prefer enjoying the 360-degree view of New Zealand’s capital from one of three dazzling restaurants at the top of the world. (We understand.) However you experience the SkyTower, it’s an Auckland must-see.
