Portland is a chic town with a kicky personality. Consider exploring a Japanese Garden with tea room, the arts district, or a planetarium with hands-on exhibitions. Out of the city and to the ocean, the coast is a soft place that feels like a watercolor painting. Sunsets melt into the sea. In Central Oregon, miles of sand dunes and freshwater lakes wait to be discovered.
Heading inland, colors become more vibrant with every shade of green imaginable. Rest in a sweet lodge on the mighty Umpqua River. (Dreams come easily here.) The Umpqua National Park is nestled on the western slope of the Cascades—there is drama here. Heading north, Eugene is the place to kick back and go wine tasting in the Willamette Valley. Every lush slice of this life could only happen in Oregon’s Pacific Northwest.

One of the most beautiful spots in the city is the acclaimed 12-acre Portland Japanese Garden, which features five different garden styles and is considered one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan. Set on a hill overlooking the city, the garden’s view of Mount Hood is fantastic. Just next to the Japanese Garden is Portland’s International Rose Test Garden, featuring over 10,000 different rose bushes. Like the Japanese Garden, it has gorgeous views across the city. Both are in the city’s attractive Washington Park.

Voodoo Doughnuts, Portland, Oregon
Open 24 hours per day, seven days a week, this cozy corner shop attracts lines of doughnut worshippers from breakfast until last call. A social scene unto itself, the line for Voodoo can wrap around the block and is packed with anxious eaters. They come to sink their teeth into raised yeast treats like the Bacon Maple Bar (a multi-flavored handful, topped with rich frosting and crunchy meat candy), the Captain my Captain (a circular celebration crowned with Captain Crunch cereal) and the Old Dirty Bastard (a guilty pleasure piled high with chocolate frosting, crushed Oreos and peanut butter).
Inside the doughnut shop, service is quick, hot and fresh, with new creations constantly shuttled up from the back bakery. Some customers are allowed to linger inside with their treats if they tie the knot while indulging in doughnuts. That’s right — the shop also performs fully legal weddings underneath a giant “holy” doughnut.

Day 3
Daily Itinerary
Drive the Coastal Road to Florence
Leave the beautiful city of Portland and head to the coast for Florence, Oregon. There are several routes, and we suggest you take the road that gets you to the northernmost section of the coastal highway, instead of taking Highway 5. The coast of Oregon is to be savored. The driving time is 5 hours with stops along the coast. Or, taking Highway 5, it’s just three hours. Spend the day taking it all in. Check in to your hotel in the prime area of Old Town, right on the Siuslaw River. It’s perfectly situated to explore the best of Florence.
Enroute Sightseeing
Thor's Well, Yachats, Oregon
On the map: Located just South of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center in Cook's Chasm, Oregon. Park on the West side of Highway 101 to see it below.
Sitting on the edge of the Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua, a gaping, seemingly bottomless sinkhole swallows the unbroken stream of seawater around it. Thor’s Well, as the natural wonder is known, is not actually bottomless; it is, however, very dangerous.
Also known as the drainpipe of the Pacific, the well is actually a hole in the rock that only appears to drain water from the ocean. According to some researchers, the Well probably started out as a sea cave dug out by the waves, before the roof eventually collapsed and created openings at the bottom and top through which the ocean sprays. The huge hole is likely only around 20 feet deep, but it still manages to produce amazing sights. Not for the faint of heart, however!
The site is most spectacular at high tide, or during storms when water washes violently over the rocks and funnels into the hole. During these sudden torrents, unsuspecting visitors to the site run the risk of being swept right into the maelstrom. Regardless of the risks, photographers and nature lovers continue to flock to the stunning fountain to see the aggressive waters that live up to their godly namesake’s stormy personality. The best time to visit Thor’s Well is one hour before the high tide to see it without water and then observe how the formation fills up.

These habitats include ponds, shelters, trees and meadows. There are currently eleven wolves at the sanctuary. They serve as ambassadors for their wild cousins in order to help raise awareness and give insight into the lives of one of nature's most interesting animals.
Suggested Sightseeing
Tidewater, Oregon
On the map: Tidewater is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Oregon. It is located on the Alsea River east of Waldport on Oregon Route 34.
Tidewater was named because it is near the head of the tide of the Alsea River. Tidewater is a great little town. It’s got that off-the-beaten track, locals-only, undiscovered territory kind of charm. It is known for being the home of the White Wolf Sanctuary.
Heceta Head Lighthouse, Florence, Oregon
On the map: Just 11 miles north of Florence, the pullout off of Highway 101 provides the first glimpse and the most-pictured view of Heceta Head and its famous lighthouse. It is a short hike from there to reach the lighthouse.
This park features a beautiful sandy beach nestled at the confluence of fresh water Cape Creek with a historic bridge, the never-to-be-forgotten Heceta Head Lighthouse and several impressive rocks just offshore in the ocean waters. A seven mile network of hiking paths join the short hike to the lighthouse. Sea lions and whales can be seen from the beach and cliff-top lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper’s house functions as a museum and bed and breakfast. Easy beach access from the parking lot.

Suggested Sightseeing
Toketee Falls, Oregon
The Toketee Falls viewpoint can be reached by an easy and short 1.2 km (0.8 mi) trail located near Clearwater, Oregon that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The lower falls plunge 80 feet over a sheer wall of basalt. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail. During peak summer months, this trail can receive heavy traffic and limited parking so plan accordingly!
Enroute Sightseeing
Roseburg, Oregon
Tucked between Oregon’s Coast Range on the west and the Cascade Range to the east, Roseburg and the greater Umpqua Valley offer an abundance of outdoor recreation. Visitors can sip world-class wine at the birthplace of Oregon pinot noir, mountain bike through the evergreens along the North Umpqua Trail, catch whitewater thrills on the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River, and meander the Highway of Waterfalls for a peek at endless cascades. And the best part of all... this can be experienced without the large crowds that other Pacific Northwest destinations see. Given its ideal weather, you can enjoy lots of outdoor activities in Roseburg, along with the city’s historic districts, museums, and breathtaking landscapes that will keep you coming back again and again.
Susan Creek Falls, Oregon
On The Map: From Roseburg, OR: Take Oregon Highway 138 east for approximately 29 miles. The day-use are is on the right side of the highway and the trailhead is on the left side. Lat/Long: 43.298407, -122.905637.
Susan Creek Falls is a cool, short respite for those traveling the North Umpqua Highway. The trail to the falls is just west of the Umpqua National Forest on Bureau of Land Management land.
The wide trail winds gradually up from the restrooms in a varied forest of Douglas-fir, Oregon white oak, Pacific madrone, big-leaf maple, western hemlock, and incense-cedar. The trail joins an old road bed coming up from the left, passes under powerlines, and then drops down into the lush bottomland around Susan Creek. Here white fir and western red-cedar add to the forest mix. Heading up the creek, the trail reaches a junction. There is a viewpoint for the falls on the east side of Susan Creek, but the best viewpoint is on the west side, accessed by crossing the creek on a footbridge. Susan Creek Falls are about 40 feet high and are a pretty sight even in the summer low-water season. There’s a picnic table below the footbridge.
If you wish to extend the walk, you can hike west from there on the universal access Emerald Trail to the new Tioga Bridge over the North Umpqua River (This 3/4 mile trail and the bridge were inaugurated in 2013). On the opposite bank, you can join the North Umpqua Trail: to the west, it's 7.8 miles on the Swiftwater Segment; going east, the Tioga Segment is 8.0 miles long. A trail also leads east from the day-use area along the river to the Susan Creek Campground.

Scientists marvel at its purity: fed by rain and snow, it’s the deepest lake in the USA and one of the most pristine on earth. Artists, photographers, and sightseers gaze in wonder at its blue water and stunning setting atop the Cascade Mountain Range.
The park is open year-round, 24 hours a day. But many of the park's roads, trails, and facilities are closed seasonally due to snow. The Southern entrance will be the only entrance open in the winter. Visit their current conditions page to find out what's open in the park for your visit.
